ACTIVITIES

Shiksha @ Sanskar @ Swavalamban

We run various activities in and around IITK campus. The daily activities include evening learning centers and an informal education center. Currently, we have two evening learning centers. One center runs at old SAC in IITK campus, and another one in a nearby village - Barasirohi. The informal education center, which we call Sopan Anaupchaarik Shikshan Kendra (SASK), also runs in Barasirohi village in the normal school hours in morning. The details of each activity are give below.

Shiksha-Sopan Anaupacharik Shikshan Kendra (SASK)

This is a semi-formal school, presently catering to the needs of children of the village Barasirohi, most of whom come from the labour class families. For these families it is difficult to send the children to the schools because of the fee. SASK is running free from fees.

Dr. V N Kulkarni Merit Scholarship

Dr VN Kulkarni Merit Scholarship was instituted by Shiksha Sopan in the year 2011 to provide support to meritorious children from poor families, living in the vicinity of IITK campus. It was started in the memory of Late Dr. V N Kulkarni, Professor of Physics at IITK.

Sushree Shashikala Joshi Memorial Sopan Library

In order to encourage reading practices and provide right kind of resource material, Shiksha Sopan has set up a library for the community, especially from economically weaker section. It runs in Type 1 Community Center, Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur.

Higher Education Cell

Many of the children coming to Sopan Evening Centers also wish to study beyond grade 12 and do professional or basic courses. We have set up a Higher Education Cell which looks for such cases where Sopan has its network, and recommends to provide financial help, often in terms of loan.

Evening Learning Centre

For economically struggling families, it becomes difficult for children to join tuition classes. Evening Learning Centres are to address this problem. There are two such centres which run for about 2 hours in the evening and are open to all children from class 4 to 12 living in that locality.

Sopan Science Cell

Sopan Science Team consisting of volunteers from the local villages, under guidance of IITK faculty and students, constantly develops / assembles such experiments and conducts science shows in nearby schools. SASK also uses these as teaching aids.
