About Us

Shiksha Sopan is a non-governmental organization (NGO) whose purpose is to impart value-based education to economically weaker section of the society. Its various activities are spreaded in and around the lush-green campus of IIT Kanpur. Shiksha Sopan's philosophy stands on three pillars of Shiksha, Sanskar, and Swavalamban. We believe that education is not merely loading children with information. Therefore, we try our best to establish a connection of class-room teaching with daily-life activities and behaviors. With this point in mind, we keep organizing various activities that are aimed to further nurture these values.

Mission

It has long been felt that the present education system in our country lacks the basic elements of practical knowledge, ethical and virtuous value system. This kind of educational system is neither of much use in the life of a common villager nor does it help making him/her self-sustained or self department.

The three keywords which provide the guidelines to Shiksha Sopan are Shiksha, Sankar and Swavalamban. Thus we work to develop models where education is not just to earn bread, but which inculcates human values and makes on self confident.

SHIKSHA

Shiksha means education, not only to make machines out of people, but to produce socially sensitive, cultured and responsible citizen who will be assets and not liabilities for the society. The education here is more student-centric.

SANSKAR

Character building and inculcation of moral values to develop sense of altruism, feeling of patriotism and respect for humanity among its disciples and beneficiaries through regular practices is one of our main objectives.

SWAVALAMBAN

Unemployment is one of the most serious problems of mankind. And the solution lies in developing respect for human labour. We are trying to train the students in various skills that will help them creating employment for themselves.

Activities

  • Shiksha-Sopan Anaupacharik Shikshan Kendra (SASK) - This is a semi-formal school, presently catering to the needs of children of the village Barasirohi, most of whom come from the labour class families. SASK is running free from fees.
  • Dr. V N Kulkarni Merit Scholarship - Dr V N Kulkarni Merit Scholarship was instituted by Shiksha Sopan in the year 2011 to provide support to meritorious children from poor families, living in the vicinity of IITK campus.
  • Higher Education Cell - Many of the children coming to Sopan Evening Centers also wish to study beyond grade 12 and do professional or basic courses. Shiksha Sopan has set up a Higher Education Cell to help them financially.
  • Sushree Shashikala Joshi Memorial Sopan Library - In order to encourage reading practices and provide right kind of resource material, for the community, especially from economically weaker section.
  • Sopan Science Cell - Sopan Science Team consisting of volunteers from the local villages, under guidance of IITK faculty and students, constantly develops such experiments and conducts science shows in nearby schools.
  • Evening Learning Centre - For economically struggling families, it becomes difficult for children to learn from school or to join tuition classes. Evening learning centres of Shiksha Sopan are to address this problem.

President- Shiksha Sopan

“A chain is as strong as the strength of its weakest link” - many among us must have read this sentence quite frequently, to an extent that it actually sounds quite banal at times. However, let us take some time out once again, grabbing this opportunity to dwell upon this apparently hackneyed thought, and its larger implications in the context of our nation, our motherland. We, the citizens, are the links and obviously it follows that our nation is as strong as the weakest link. Provided we agree that we want to build a strong nation which is able to compete with the best in the world, the immediate question which follows is - how strong is our weakest link? Together, as a team, we will continue to fail, if we do not empower the weakest among us.
